Credit Cards for College Students The Pitfalls
Parents might wince at the thought of their teenager having the power of a credit limit in their name even as they enter their most important years in molding them into the adults that they would turn out to be. They should not, as more and more students – especially those entering colleges – are being enticed and actually getting their hands on some form of student credit cards.
Their credit limit might not be as extensive as their older counterparts in the workforce but all the same, banks have begun to recognize the substantial purchasing power held by these roving young men and young women, who are out to impress both academically and socially. The latter is seemingly the more important factor for them, so much so that if one college mate were to hold a student credit card, the rest of the herd would be asking “how”. The question is really “why”
How easy is it for one to apply student credit card? These days, everyone is finding it easier and easier to apply for a credit card. Banks are going out of their way to entice people into signing up for supposedly free credit line from them. Freebies in electrical items, cash back offers, rebates offers, contests galore, all these are being offered to get people to sign up. Applications are nowadays being done by way of agents, so much so, not having any salary slips is no big deal.
The most important thing for newcomers, it seems, is that they are relatively clean in terms of their credit history, and that literally mean that you should not be a bankrupt. That’s it. Not even a blacklist would dissuade an agent from pursuing your application and sometime you could just get away by being a good customer of a bank to be issued a credit card.
The same consideration goes for application for a credit card for college student. Banks are less worrisome when it comes to younger clientele as long as their financial background is sound. Being young would mean that they carry no previous financial baggage unlike adults would invariably have a whole lists of credit by the time they reach their middle ages. The worry is more on whether or not they can actually pay for the purchases they made.
Where does a college student get their money from? There are a number of avenues; with the paternal source being the most popular, and scholarship and loans coming a close second. Rarely would a student survive on working part time, although some do make it a point to take on a part time job to boost their income. Paying for the monthly installment, perhaps?
This means that college students are a veritable segment of cash rich and consumerism driven group of people. Banks recognizes this. Parents could ever be depended on to help pay for the outstanding amount so that their youngsters do not start working life on the wrong footage for being deep in debt. There is in effect a “guarantor” effect which is never mentioned, but one which everyone knows exist.
Banks do take this danger into consideration when they issue college student credit card. They thus make it a point to limit substantially the credit limit allowed to a student so that spending spree of the irresponsible kind would not be a normalcy. Safeguards, however, are at best, nominal as there is simply no way banks could stop a college student from applying and getting more than one credit card from each of them.
This is then the real danger of allowing college student access to credit cards. To protect the confidentiality of their customers, banks cannot share their information and unless, a college student default big time in paying his or her dues of their outstanding amount to the point of being blacklisted, it is more of a give and pray move by the credit card issuer. That, and the aforementioned informal guarantor.
Holding a credit card, however, could also help point to the college student of the importance of managing his or her money, and doing it well. It’s a valuable lesson which no one could teach but the hope is that they do not end up learning life’s rope the hard way instead.
